Region-specific terrain textures are used for Europe and Hawaii.FlightGear has been synced with the JSBSim project.Start downloading FlightGear v2.8.0 for free from Best of all, being open-source, the simulator is owned by the community and everyone is encouraged to contribute. FlightGear is used all over the world by desktop flight simulator enthusiasts, for University research and education, for a variety of aerospace engineering and visualization work in industry, and even for interactive exhibits in museums.įlightGear features more than 400 aircraft, a worldwide seamless scenery database, a multi-player environment, detailed sky modelling, a flexible and open aircraft modelling system, varied networking options, multiple display support, a powerful scripting language, and an open architecture. FlightGear is developed by a worldwide group of volunteers, brought together by a shared ambition to create the most realistic flight simulator possible that is free to use, modify and distribute. Even rotating beacons illuminate the surroundings correctly.įounded in 1997, FlightGear celebrated the 15th anniversary of it’s first official release in July. This enables real-time shadows, and support for multiple light sources such as landing lights. This is still considered experimental and not enabled by default. Finally, a new automated system is now available for scenery submissions that automatically get rolled into the scenery distribution to be enjoyed by everyone.Ī very exciting new addition is “Project Rembrandt”. An improved atmospheric scattering and terrain haze model means the lighting of the terrain is more realistic. Textures can be region specific, and users can select between summer and winter textures in-sim. Placement of random buildings and trees match the underlying terrain texture, and urban areas now have denser random buildings. V2.8.0 includes improvements making FlightGear world more realistic than ever before. This new version contains many exciting new features, enhancements and bugfixes. OSM2City roads, buildings, and objects based on Open Street Map data are available as separate downloads, in addition to custom scenery. The FlightGear development team is happy to announce the v2.8.0 release of FlightGear, the free, open-source flight simulator. They are useful for people with limited internet. These contain a snapshot of the current state of Scenery, and the current state of Aircraft in the official project repository. The FlightGear project sells USB thumb drives/CDs/DVDs on their website. Scenery is downloaded as you fly when Terrasync is enabled. It is recommended to download the larger "data" package containing art and content from sourceforge if transfers are slow.ħ00+ aircraft in the official Hangar can be downloaded with 1 click from the launcher, other aircraft have to be downloaded from 3rd party hangars or from repositories on sites like Sourceforge, GitHub, or GitLab. People on Linux can also download and build FlightGear from the PPA repositories for their distribution. Binaries for Linux are also available from FlightGear version 2020.3+ Ī stripped down version of Flightgear is also available on Raspberry Pi. See FlightGear release history for more details.īinary executables are downloadable for Windows and Mac from sourceforge. Rather than developing their own simulation models, they opted to NASA's flight models instead. The first release happened on July 17 th, 1997. The development team consists of ten members. All of which needs PLIB in order to build. FlightGear used a simulation engine called SimGear in addition to a terrain engine called TerraGear.
